Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of placebo effects terminology, principles and neurobiological mechanisms
  • Appreciate how nocebo effects can drive symptom generation and/or amplification across a range of psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders
  • Develop a framework for ethically harnessing placebo effects and mitigating nocebo effects in clinical practice

Dr. Matthew Burke is a Behavioural Neurologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. He is cross appointed between Psychiatry and Neurology and holds leadership positions as the Neuropsychiatry Lead for the University of Toronto Neurology Residency Program and as the Director of Sunnybrook’s Traumatic Brain Injury Program. Prior to his current appointments, Dr. Burke completed medical school and neurology training at the University of Toronto and then a fellowship in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Burke’s research focuses on investigating complex topics at the interfaces between psychiatry, neurology and neuroscience. On the present topic of Placebo Effects, Dr. Burke has published several influential articles with media coverage on outlets such as CNN, BBC and The Guardian. He was recently commissioned to lead a Collection of Articles for Lancet Psychiatry titled “Reconceptualizing Placebo and Nocebo Effects” that was published last month. Finally, his contributions to emerging areas of neuropsychiatry were recently recognized with the 2025 American Academy of Neurology Norman Geschwind Prize.
