Maryam Noroozian

Maryam Noroozian, MD, Iran

My name is Maryam Noroozian, MD. I serve as a Full Professor of Neurology and Director of the Cognitive Neurology, Dementia & Neuropsychiatry Research Center at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Iran. I earned my MD in Medicine from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 1992. I then completed my Neurology Residency at the same institution in 1997. 

 I began my academic career in 1998 as an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), immediately after obtaining the national board Certification. Since 2004, I have served as the Founder and Director of Iran’s first Memory Clinic. In 2012, I initiated the country's first geriatric medicine residency program. Since 2014, I have been a member of the Alzheimer’s Disease International Medical & Scientific Advisory Panel (MSAP). In 2017, I launched the first Neuropsychiatry Fellowship Program at TUMS. Since 2019, I have contributed to the WHO Global Dementia Observatory Knowledge Exchange Peer Review Network. In 2022, I was honored with the international Metrodora Award (USA). This prestigious award is presented to women from developing countries who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the fields of mental health, science, and medicine. In 2023, I established and began directing the Scientific Society for Dementia and Cognitive Disorders in Iran (SADR). Since 2024, I have served as the Director of the Cognitive Neurology, Dementia & Neuropsychiatry Research Center at TUMS. 

In 2004, I established the first Memory Clinic in Iran, pioneering dementia care in the region. In 2017, I developed and launched the 'Memory Clinics in Iran – MCI Initiative', a national model for identifying and addressing diagnosis and management of cognitive disorders and dementia in Iran. I have led many research projects on the neuropsychological and neuroimaging aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Since 2019, I have directed the development and implementation of the national virtual education program 'Cognitive Impairment in Clinical Practice (CICP)', especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. I have mentored hundreds of medical students, residents, and fellows in neurology and dementia care. Over the past 28 years, I have led many educational programs in both academic and media settings to raise public awareness about cognitive disorders.

Over the past 28 years, I have been deeply committed to teaching medical students, neurology residents, and dementia fellows at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.  I have engaged in research collaboration with McGill University (Canada), particularly in the field of neuroimaging and aging. I have worked with the University of Southern Denmark on developing culturally adapted dementia assessment models. I actively contribute to the Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) and WHO Global Dementia Observatory (GDO).
