Maria I. Lapid, M.D. is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic Department of Psychiatry and Psychology. Born and raised in the Philippines, Dr. Lapid has an undergraduate degree in BS Pharmacy from the University of the Philippines, and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of the East RMMMC in Manila. She pursued further training in the United States - completed Adult Psychiatry residency at the Mayo Clinic, Geriatric Psychiatry fellowship at the VA Minneapolis/University of Minnesota program, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine clinical pathway fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. She has American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) board certifications in Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Lapid has been an attending physician at the Mayo Clinic since 2003, and her clinical practices include outpatient geriatric and adult psychiatry consultations, inpatient palliative care consultation, and hospice care. Educationally, Dr. Lapid founded the Mayo Clinic Geriatric Psychiatry fellowship and served as the program director for 15 years. In addition to her clinical practice and teaching responsibilities, she is also involved in clinical research on quality of life in geriatric, palliative, and hospice patients, is one of the Chairs of the Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board (IRB), and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals. Dr. Lapid is one of only few psychiatrists in the United States who is concurrently boarded in hospice and palliative medicine.
