Better Mental Health for Older People

Mental Health and Ageing –
Towards a New Age of Enlightenment

The IPA 2008 European Meeting is scheduled for 8-11 April in Dublin, Ireland. It is being held in association with the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and will take place at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) meeting venue.

The 2008 theme, Mental Health and Ageing – Towards a New Age of Enlightenment, was selected by the Organizing committee as reflection upon Dublin’s place in history as a center of knowledge and also on the advances within the field as we move forward to important improvements in care.

Scientific Programme
With an international, multidisciplinary and diverse approach to the Scientific Programme, the IPA 2008 European Meeting will thoroughly reflect the diverse themes that are contained within and support IPA’s mission: Better Mental Health for Older People. Comprehensive, stimulating, and innovative sessions on basic and translational research will parallel multidisciplinary sessions addressing state of the art practice issues.

Robin Jacoby (United Kingdom), Professor of Old Age Psychiatry and Editor of the Oxford Textbook of Old Age Psychiatry will launch the conference as the opening session’s Raymond Levy Lecture presenter. He will give a timely and informative presentation entitled Bequests from elders to the young and beautiful.

Following the opening session, a wide variety of interdisciplinary topics will be presented within the plenary, symposia, free communication and workshop programming. The Scientific Committee is assembling an internationally-renowned group of scientists, clinicians, practitioners and experts in the field, to contribute to the core programme while also providing opportunities for promising, up-and-coming young researchers to present their data and new ideas. Please also consider attending the IPA Forum on Residential Care Facilities just prior to the Opening Session which is open to anyone attending the conference that has an interest in the topic. In addition, two other pre-meeting workshops are being planned for Monday, 7 April; one on Psychotherapy and the other one will be a Neuroimaging workshop. Details will be posted as they become available.

To submit an abstract for either a Free Communication Session or a Poster Presentation, please visit http://www.ipa2008dublin.org and finalize your submission by 5 February 2008.

Social Event
The opening reception will begin with a tour of the Guinness Storehouse and conclude with a reception at the Gravity Bar.
