Barry Reisberg (United States)
The American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) has named Barry Reisberg, MD, of the NYU Langone Medical Center, as its 2011 Distinguished Scientist for his pioneering research on Alzheimer’s disease and his mentorship of rising leaders in the field. Dr. Reisberg, United States, is a former President of the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) serving from 1997 through 1999. He has also served as an officer and member of the Board of Directors since 1985.

At the NYU Langone Medical Center, Dr. Reisberg is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry, director of the Fisher Alzheimer’s Disease Program, and director, Clinical Core, NYU Alzheimer’s Disease Center. He served as the research training director for the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program at NYU for 20 years, and directed the Clinical Research Fellowship Program for more than 25 years. As a longtime mentor, he has influenced the careers of leading investigators from around the world.

May 2010

Alistair Burns (United Kingdom) was appointed as National Clinical Director for Dementia in January 2010 for the United Kingdom. Professor Burns’ role will be to provide leadership for the implementation of the Department's National Dementia Strategy and to promote better care of people with dementia, and their carers, across health and social care. He will also lead on implementing the recommendations of the review of the prescribing of anti-psychotics drugs for people with dementia.

Julian Hughes (United Kingdom) was recently promoted to honorary professor of philosophy of ageing in the Institute for Ageing and Health, Newcastle University, UK. With colleagues from palliative care (Marie Lloyd-Williams, UK) and medicine (Greg Sachs, USA), he has recently edited Supportive Care for the Person with Dementia, published by Oxford University Press. This follows: Palliative Care in Severe Dementia (Quay Books), Dementia: Mind, Meaning, and the Person (OUP) and Ethical Issues in Dementia Care (Jessica Kingsley).

Joel Sadavoy (Canada) was presented with the International Federation on Ageing (IFA) President’s Award for 2010 at their biennial global conference in Melbourne, Australia. This award is presented to outstanding individuals both for life-time achievements in the field of ageing and for making outstanding contributions to the Federation.

December 2009

Sabine Bãhrer-Kohler (Switzerland) has been appointed as a representative of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) to the WHO Advisory group for the revision of the ICD-10 Mental and Behavioral Disorders. The Group is led by Dr. B. Saraceno, Director, WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. The IFSW represents 745,000 members of national organizations in 90 countries.

Nicola Lautenschlager (Australia) was recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of International Psychogeriatrics. Her four-year appointment as Editor-in-Chief is effective January 2011.

Carlos de Mendonça Lima (Portugal) was appointed as the Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the Hospital of Guimarães.

Ajit Shah (United Kingdom) was recently conferred as Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Hallym University in Seoul, Korea.
