Bengt Winblad, MD, PhD, graduated in medicine from University of Umeå, Sweden in 1971. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1975. He is professor of geriatric medicine and chief physician at the Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge and the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden since 1987.

Dr Winblad is presently involved in an array of research activities that include a position as Director of the Karolinska Institutet Aging Research Center (ARC), KASPAC (Karolinska Institutet Sumitomo Pharmaceutical Alzheimer Center) and the Swedish Brain Power Center of Excellence. He is serving as a reviewer of research centers in Europe and the United States. His research interests include epidemiology of dementias, the clinical evaluation and treatment of dementia conditions, especially Alzheimer’s disease, and the molecular genetics, pathology, and biochemistry of dementias. Dr Winblad has more than 700 original publications in gerontology, geriatrics and dementia research.

He was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Medical Research Council from 1988-1995. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of 10 international scientific journals. He is a member of the Nobel Assembly for the Prize of Medicine and Physiology at the Karolinska Institute since 1988. Dr Winblad is the recipient of numerous honors and awards; he received the Swedish Society of Medicine Alzheimer Award in 1994, the Royal Swedish Academy of Medical Sciences Award for 1997, the Norage Kabi Pharmacia Awards four times, the Alois Alzheimer Award in 1997 and the Nordic Prize in Gerontology 2002. Dr Winblad was president and organized the second IPA International Conference in Umeå, Sweden in 1985. As an IPA Board Member, Dr Winblad organized the IPA 12th International Conference in Stockholm in 2005.
