Pamela Melding, ONZM trained in Medicine at Liverpool University graduating MB.Ch.B, (1970). She holds two fellowships, in Anaesthesia, FRCA (U.K.) (1975) and Psychiatry - FRANZCP (1989). She also holds a postgraduate Diploma in Health Service Management (Dist). Massey University,(1993). Dr. Melding has considerable administrative experience and was the clinical director for the Auckland Regional Pain Clinic from 1979-1984. From 1990-1995, She was the clinical director responsible for the development of old age psychiatry services for Waitemata Health, Auckland, New Zealand. Her current position is Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, Kingsley Mortimer Unit, Waitemata Health, and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Department of Psychiatry, University of Auckland (since 1995). Pamela was seconded to the Ministry of Health Advisory Body for the development of the New Zealand national ‘Health of Older People Strategy’, and the development of the national ‘Guidelines for Specialist Services for Older People’. She was the binational Chair of the Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age of the RANZCP from 2000-2004 and currently is a member of the Faculty Executive Committee. Pamela, with Daniel O’Connor (IPA Board Member), convened the very successful IPA/FPOA regional meeting in Rotorua, New Zealand in April 2005. Her clinical interests include chronic pain in older people, cognitive assessment, ECT and training in Psychiatry of Old Age. Pamela has co-edited successful two books, ‘Geriatric Consultation Psychiatry’ and ‘Psychogeriatric Service Delivery’, both with Oxford University Press and has contributed chapters on aspects of Older Peoples mental health to several international text books. Her research publications, experience and interests include tinnitus, chronic pain, service delivery, ECT in older people, and post operative cognitive decline. Dr. Melding was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the 2006 New Year’s Honours list for services to psychiatry.
