Dr. Maeda is currently Vice President of Kobe University Hospital. Since he graduated from Kobe University School of Medicine in 1971 and finished a one-year internship, he has been working as a psychiatrist. His research interest at the time was how the brain affects pituitary hormone secretion, psychoneuroendocrinology. After 11 years at Kobe University Hospital, he moved to Hyogo Institute of Aging Brain and Cognitive Disorders. This institute was built for clinical research on dementing illness in 1993. Dr. Maeda was head of the research division and a vice director of the medical center.

In 1998, Dr. Maeda became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Kobe University School of Medicine. Since then, he has taught psychiatry to medical students and conducted research in this field.

Dr. Maeda’s interest has been in mental disorders in old people. He has studied not only basic but also clinical aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. His focus is on mood disorders in elderly, too. Through Dr. Maeda’s experiences as a board member of Japanese Psychogeriatric Society he is aware of the importance of international collaborations in this field from academic and practical viewpoints. The mission of IPA is to improve the mental health of older people everywhere through education, research, professional development, advocacy, health promotion, and service development. Dr. Maeda is one of the leaders in this field in Japan. He also sits on the board of directors for the Japan Psychogeriatric Society (JPS).
