Dr. Jay Luxenberg (United States) is an internist and geriatrician. He is the Director of Medical Services at the Jewish Home, San Francisco, which is a 450-bed Skilled Nursing Facility and Psychiatric Hospital.
After completing a fellowship in geriatric medicine, Dr. Luxenberg spent 1984-87 as a Medical Staff Fellow in the Section on Brain Aging and Dementia, Laboratory of Neurosciences, at the National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He had a private practice of geriatric medicine from 1987-1996. Until 1996 he was also the Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Luxenberg is Clinical Professor, School of Medicine, U.C.S.F.
He is currently the editor of IPA On-line, the Web page of the International Psychogeriatric Association. His research interests relate to behavioral symptoms of dementing illnesses, and he is currently carrying out an NIH-funded project using bright light and melatonin to treat agitated behavior and day-night reversal in dementia.
Dr. Luxenberg teaches a wide range of students, ranging from undergraduates at the University of California, Berkeley, as part of a course on aging held every semester, to medical students, medical residents, and Geriatric Medicine Fellows at the University of California, San Francisco. He has published three books and many research articles on topics related to aging. He has enjoyed his participation with the IPA, and looks forward to continued growth of our Web page.
Dr. Luxenberg has been active in IPA since 1994 and is currently on the IPA Board of Directors.
