Carlos Augusto de Mendonça Lima graduated in medicine from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1982. Since 1980 he was trained in general psychiatry before moving to the University of Franche-Comté in France in 1984, where he undertook formal education in psychiatry and in clinical pharmacology (PhD). In 1990, he moved to Switzerland to work in a general psychiatry outpatient board and finish the last research for his doctorate on depression and thyroid disorders. In 1993 he moved to Lausanne to work for Jean Wertheimer at the Geriatric Psychiatry Service of the University of Lausanne.

At this service he developed a clinical activity initially as practitioner and after as director of the Day Hospital and of the Outpatient clinic. He undertook several researches on the assessment of quality of care and collaborated with the program Quality of Mental Health Care of WHO. This first collaboration and the organization of several consensus meetings on Old Age Psychiatry were the core of missions of the WHO Collaborating Center for Psychiatry of the Elderly created at this service on 1986 and directed by him from 1986 until 2004. He promoted the European Network on Old Age Psychiatry with other colleagues. This network is currently given support to develop a European postgraduate educational program on Old age Psychiatry. At the University of Lausanne he became a Senior Lecturer and collaborated to teach Old Age Psychiatry at graduate and postgraduate levels for medical students and for the continuous education of nurses. 

He moved in 2004 to Rio de Janeiro where he assumed a Professorship at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. There he is collaborating with the clinical activities of the outpatient facility for old persons with dementia and other related disorders in old age. He is also integrated at the teaching postgraduate program in Old Age Psychiatry. He continues to collaborate with WHO, developing projects in the specific field of Old Age Psychiatry, throughout the WHO Collaborating Centre of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

His main research interests include pharmacological studies in depression, evaluation of the quality of care, education of Old Age Psychiatry and public health aspects of Old Age Psychiatry. Some results of his scientific production were presented in two Congress of IPA (Jerusalem 1997 and Nice 2001) when he organized some symposia. He is member of the board of the Section of Old Age Psychiatry at WPA and AEP. During the year 2004 he was the President of the European Association of Geriatric Psychiatry.
