IPA Bulletin
Editor's Note

David G. FolksBy David G. Folks

As the IPA Silver Congress in Osaka in October 2007 takes shape, the IPA Bulletin will serve as a key point of communication about the meeting and its participants. As President Sadavoy has noted in his message, several of our colleagues and friends from around the world are planning to attend the biennial congress. This is a wonderful occasion to present your research or clinical findings, to learn about delivery of services to older adults around the globe, and to share ideas and compare perspectives on psychogeriatrics. Of course, Japan offers many unique cultural opportunities that will make this meeting memorable.

In preparation, I am asking for news items and recent developments that can serve to stimulate discussion before and during the congress. Please send your submission to me at dgfolks@unmc.edu or to Jodi Metzgar at jmetzgar@ipa-online.org

. In the meantime, the next IPA regional meeting is less than a year away, scheduled in conjunction with the Psychogeriatric Society of Turkey, for 3–6 May 2007 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Istanbul.

IPA Board of Directors continue to lead a number of initiatives pertinent to substantial issues impacting our patients and their families. Of course, dementia, delirium, mood and anxiety disorders, suicide, and, psychosocial factors common in late life as well as the interface between psychiatric and general medical problems are in the forefront of many discussions. Equally concerning,is global unrest that clearly impacts our patients and their families, and “political and environmental forces” such as the AIDS epidemic and resulting problems discussed by President Sadavoy in his recent visit to Africa. Such issues are of great concern to IPA members, and, your communication through IPA Bulletin is of vital importance to the leadership.

I urge all members or readers of the Bulletin to take a few minutes and submit a “blurb” that will inform and educate us all about your region. Most submissions to IPA Bulletin can be placed into production and published in less than six months. Short news pieces can often have a very quick turnaround and be published almost immediately. I am happy to hear from you and look forward to your communications at dgfolks@unmc.edu.
