Recent projections indicate that the percentage of the population aged 60 and over will be higher than 12 percent of the total population in 2025 for most of Latin America. In 1997, the percentage was under 8% in most of these countries. (IPC-IDB-2002)
This dramatic increase requires immediate preparation in Latin American healthcare communities so that the needs of the rapidly aging population can be met. This IPA Regional Meeting will focus on psychogeriatric education, clinical development and service delivery systems. It is being designed to provide a gathering place and forum for healthcare professionals of many disciplines, including psychiatrists, neurologists, general and family practitioners, nurses, psychologists and social workers, so that they can work together in anticipation of meeting the demands of the future.
For more than two decades IPA has been at the forefront of providing timely and useful information to physicians, researchers, and allied health care professionals via its semi-annual meetings, its journals, newsletters, and specially developed educational materials. The ensuing knowledge is utilized to improve patient care, enhance trans-national collaboration, and point in the direction of further research, training, service delivery and public policy.

IPA Regional Initiatives
The IPA Regional Initiatives program was
established to provide a framework and infrastructure for psychogeriatric professionals to work together on the
development of psychogeriatrics within their own regions. To facilitate the sharing
of information, the IPA Regional Initiatives brings together regional opinion leaders
through forums and provides the opportunity for them to network and share information via the Internet. Through
these activities, IPA works with the regional leaders to identify and address issues of
mental health and aging specific to the region.
Current IPA Regional Initiatives include: Latin American Initiative, Asia-Pacific Initiative, Sub-Sahara African Initiative,
