Plus
an extensive list of Latin American Speakers
The Brazilian Association of Geriatric Neuropsychiatry (ABNPG), founded in 1996, is the only national non-profit organization of its kind with an interdisciplinary approach in the field of geriatric neurology and psychiatry.
The ABNPG promotes exchange of information and experience among scientists and health care professionals by stimulating scientific investigation, promoting debates and conferences, and distributing scientific publications. We hope to contribute to the scientific progress of geriatric neurology and psychiatry in Brazil, with emphasis on teaching, research and social assistance to improve the quality of life in the elderly. With an escalating interest in our topics, international cooperation at this point is very important to strengthen our efforts.
We are delighted to be able to collaborate with
our Brazilian colleagues to expand the previously scheduled annual meeting of
the Brazilian Association of Geriatric Neuropsychiatry (ABNPG) into a joint IPA
Regional Meeting in Latin America in 2000.
Due to the present economic situation in
Argentina that is extremely poor, any type of meetings and activities are very
expensive. We, of
the Argentine Society
of GerontoNeuroPsychiatry, proposed that the IPA meeting be relocated to Brazil.
Dr. João Carlos Barbosa Machado, MD, President
of ABNPG, and his association have enthusiastically agreed that moving this
meeting to Porto Alegre, Brazil (southern most portion of Brazil, near Buenos
Aires, Uruguay, and Chile), provides an exciting opportunity for IPA and the
Latin American countries. Dr.
Machado has undertaken the Chair responsibilities. My colleagues and I support him and will provide assistance wherever
needed.
We are very pleased to join Dr.
Mangone and our Argentinian colleagues
in creating an
outstanding IPA Regional Meeting in October,
2000. To
achieve this goal, the annual meeting of the Brazilian Association
of Geriatric Neuropsychiatry will
expand to become a full regional
meeting. It will be sponsored
jointly by IPA and will take place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on the
same dates as originally scheduled.
This important IPA
/ ABNPG meeting will be chaired by João Carlos Barbosa Machado, MD,
President of the
Brazilian Association of Geriatric Neuropsychiatry,
and fully supported by the leaders and organizations of the region. It provides an outstanding opportunity for a diverse international group
of participants to gather, learn and creatively share experiences and
viewpoints.
Opening ceremonies will be held on the
evening of 12 October 2000 (a Brazilian national holiday), preceded by
pre-meeting activities scheduled for that afternoon. These will be followed by scientific sessions all day on the
13th and 14th, and one-half day on the 15th.
The Scientific Program is based on the theme, “Mental Health in the
Elderly: Transcultural Perspectives.”
This meeting will also host a unique forum
for the development of policies and guidelines pertinent to the region. Opinion leaders from Latin American countries will meet in the months
prior to the conference to compile specific topics to be addressed with all
participants at the forum in October.
The
International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) and ABNPG are strongly committed
to bringing the latest information about psychogeriatrics to Latin America.
We also share a commitment to support the development of
policies and guidelines that are identified by Latin America’s foremost
opinion leaders, to ensure that this meeting represents the best interests of
the region. We are certain this
meeting will be an important one for all scientists, clinicians, and other
healthcare professionals in the region and hope you will plan to join us in
Porto Alegre, Brazil, for a stimulating conference.
Sincerely,
João
Carlos Barbosa Machado, MD
Chair, IPA Latin American Regional Meeting
Nearly half of the
continent of South America can be described in one tantalizing word:
BRAZIL. It is almost as big as the USA, and is home to 145 million people.
It is a country that has the world’s eighth largest population, and also
the eighth largest economy.
Porto Alegre
Capital city of the
southernmost Brazilian state, Rio Grande do Sul. It boasts the
best standard of living and the largest green areas of any capital city
in Brazil. Porto Alegre still has the charming atmosphere of a small town
despite having 1.5 million inhabitants, who naturally and undeniably
identify themselves with neighboring countries of Argentina and
Uruguay. The main cities of South America, namely Buenos Aires,
Montevideo, San Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, are all just a short distance
away.
Meeting Language
The official language of
the meeting will be English with simultaneous translation to Spanish and
Portuguese.
Passport & Visa
Requirements
BOTH a valid passport
along with a
visa are required for entry into Brazil.
Note: It is important to
carry a passport at all times. Police can, and occasionally do, demand
identification at any time. A passport is usually required to check into a
hotel, cash traveler ’s checks and conduct other routine business.
Time Difference
Porto Alegre is three hours
behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and two hours ahead of Eastern Standard
Time (EST).
Banks
Banking hours are generally
10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. There are currency exchanges
that usually operate from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.
Currency
The unit of currency is the
real, at a fluctuating exchange rate of one real = 1.84 USD.
Travelers checks and
currency can be exchanged at banks, currency exchange shops and hotels, as
well as Airports.
Hotels are convenient but
usually offer the poorest exchange rate. Banks and currency exchanges
offer similar rates, but cash, primarily US dollars, commands a better
exchange rate and lower fee than travelers checks.
Credit Cards
Most hotels,
restaurants, shops and airlines accept the following credit cards:
American Express, VISA and Mastercard.
Climate
It is Spring time in
Brazil. Spring would be the season when there is light rain. The average
temperature in October is 22°C (75°F).
What to Wear
In general, the local
atmosphere is somewhat casual, especially in spring. However, Porto Alegre
is a fairly cosmopolitan city and sport jackets are worn in the evening at
the better hotels and restaurants.
Electricity
The electricity
supplied throughout Brazil is 220 volts/AC 50
cycles. Standard three pin plugs are fitted to domestic appliances, 110
Volt appliances must be fitted with transformer, however international
shave sockets are found in many major hotels and take 240 volts and 100
volts.
Travel Insurance
It is recommended that you
have the appropriate level of coverage required for your travel
arrangements. Further information can be obtained from your travel agent.
Food
The food in this area
is slightly different than the rest of Brazil. There are many Italian,
German and Argentine Restaurants where
grilled meats are popular.
Tours & Sightseeing
There will be optional
tours available on a daily basis which include:
City of Porto Alegre
Tour - half day.
"Serras Guachas"
- full day tour into the surrounding mountain area, including a
typical lunch.
Uva e Vinho - full day
tour into the wine producing region, including a typical lunch.
