Message from the President

I am delighted that IPA will again have the opportunity to meet with our colleagues in Latin America. This meeting, co-sponsored with the Brazilian Association of Geriatric Neuropsychiatry (ABNPG), will enable us to explore transcultural issues affecting the elderly with neuropsychiatric disorders.

Joćo Carlos Barbosa Machado and the Host Committee are planning a stimulating and thought provoking meeting, which will be of great importance to the entire region. I look forward to meeting you there.

Edmond Chiu, President, IPA

Invitation to Porto Alegre

The Brazilian Association of Geriatric Neuro-psychiatry (ABNPG) is honored to organize this Joint Meeting with IPA, and sincerely appreciates the support of the leaders and organizations in other Latin American countries. On behalf of the Host Committee, we are pleased to invite you to join us in Porto Alegre, Brazil, next October.

The countries of Latin America are not yet prepared to cope with the health-associated problems of their fast-growing elderly populations. This important Joint Meeting is a unique opportunity to share information about the needs and perspectives of the region, in order to develop pertinent policies and guidelines. The main theme, "Mental Health in the Elderly: Transcultural Perspectives," promises an exciting debate with a multidisciplinary emphasis on the similarities and differences related to aging and mental health worldwide. The Scientific Program will also address the latest developments in research on cognitive decline, functional psychiatric disorders and many more topics.

We look forward to welcoming you to Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul state, strategically located at the center of the main South American cities. Please join us! Sunsets mirrored upon Guaiba Lake, delicious cuisine and, most especially, warm Brazilian hospitality await you.

Joćo Carlos Barbosa Machado, Chair
