“INTRODUCTION IN OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY”
29 August - 4 September 2004
Oradea, Romania

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It gives to us great pleasure to invite you to participate in the First Old Age Psychiatry Summer Course, scheduled to take place in Oradea, Romania, 29 August – 4 September 2004. This course is organised by the International Psychogeriatric Association’s (IPA) Eastern European Initiative and the Romanian Association of Geriatric Psychiatry (ARG), for young psychiatrists from Eastern European countries.

In Romania, Old Age Psychiatry has been recognized as a subspecialty since 2001. The number of professionals working in the field is still too low to meet the needs of care of elderly with mental disorders. Our goal is to provide the basic skills of old age psychiatry at a high scientific level to more and more young psychiatrists in our part of the world. This will help them to be able to face to the problems raised by mental health in the elderly.

The first course in geriatric psychiatry with international participation was organised in 2000, during the 28th Congress of the European Association of Geriatric Psychiatry. Now IPA and ARG are presenting an intensive 7-day course that will introduce essentials of geriatric psychiatry. We hope this course will enhance young general psychiatrists’ professional effectiveness. Caring of the mentally ill elderly requires an understanding of biological changes in late life and specificity of elderly mental disorders, recognition of medical co-morbidity in the elderly, the high prevalence of depression, and cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms of dementia. We believe that elderly mental illnesess are under-recognized and under-treated. Thus we hope that because of this course these disorders might be recognizable, understandable and better treated. The course will take place at Oradea and Felix Spa.

Felix Spa, a thermal watering resort is located in Bihor County near Oradea, in the northwestern part of Romania. The thermal water at Bath Felix is more than 24,000 years old. The main cure factor of Felix Spa is the slightly radioactivity of thermal mineral water. The beauty of the thermal lake is ‘Nymphaea lotus thermalis’ a relic of the luxuriant flora of the Tertiary Age.

We welcome you to Oradea and Felix in August 2004!
