Robert C. Baldwin, DM, FRCP, FRCPsych
(England, United Kingdom), Board of Directors

Robert Charles Baldwin is a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, Central Manchester Healthcare NHS Trust, and Lead Consultant for Young Onset Dementia (Manchester). An Honorary Professor at the University of Manchester, Dr. Baldwin earned a Bachelor of Medicine degree (Southampton) in 1976. He is on the Specialist Register for Old Age Psychiatry (UK) and is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians (1997) and the Royal College of Psychiatrists (1994).

Dr. Baldwin’s principal areas of interest lie in young onset dementia services, and the detection, management and treatment of depression in later life. His research has dealt mainly with neuroimaging and mood disorders, as well as liaison services for medically ill patients.

As a member of IPA’s Board of Directors, to which he was elected in 2000, Dr. Baldwin looks forward to becoming involved with the organization’s educational initiatives to improve the detection and management of mood disorders in later life, which he firmly believes will become a substantial cause of morbidity as the century progresses.

He also is actively involved with the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry, Royal College of Psychiatrists; the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) prevention and treatment of depression initiative; and the WHO initiative on a consensus statement for the detection and management of depression in later life and has co-authored under the auspices of WPA a major textbook on evidence-based guidelines for depressive disorder (published by Martin Dunitz). Additionally, he is a member of the European Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, the British Medical Association, the Medical Protection Society, the Alzheimer’s Society, and the British Neuropsychiatry Association and the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry.

The author of numerous books and peer-reviewed journal articles, Dr. Baldwin serves as a Board Member of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and is on the Editorial Board of International Psychogeriatrics. He has served on IPA’s Board of Directors since 2000.
