Guk-Hee Suh, MD, PhD

Guk-Hee Suh, M.D., Ph.D., of Seoul, Korea, is Associate Professor of the Department of Psychiatry, Hallym University College of Medicine. He has been also Head of the Dementia Clinic in Hallym University Medical Center, Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital since 1998. After receiving his Medical Degree from the Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1985, he had been trained as a resident of department of psychiatry and clinical and a research fellow of old age psychiatry at Seoul National University Hospital. And he received doctoral degree from the Seoul National University Graduate School. 

His areas of research interest and activity have focused on dementia with wide range including epidemiology, neuropsychology, pharmacotherapy and mental health economics, as well as in the field of psychogeriatric service delivery.

He and his colleague have proposed a theory on epidemiological transition in dementia, explaining diversity in the prevalence of dementia in different areas of the world in his paper published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica 104: 4-11. 2001. He and his colleagues are conducting a longitudinal prospective cohort study for the Korean elderly in Asan, Korea. He has developed and validated a new computerized instrument for diagnosis of dementia, named ‘CARDS (Cognitive Assessment Reference Diagnoses System)’ recently. Its validation paper for Psychogeriatrics was published in 3(2):54-62, 2003. Over the last few years, he has translated and validated instruments for use in psychogeriatrics, locally, including the CAMDEX, the GMS-AGECAT, the DIS-IV, the BEHAVE-AD, the ADAS, the DAD and the CMAI. He has conducted epidemiological studies on dementia, depression and delusional disorder in Korea and two large-scale clinical trials, one for comparison of risperidone to haloperidol in the treatment of BPSD that will be published in American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry soon and the other for nationwide clinical trial of galantamine including pharmacoeconomic aspect as principal investigator of 24 Korean centers. Since 2001, he has worked for development of IPA South-East Asia Initiative with colleagues of neighbor Asian countries. During last 4 years, he has published more than 40 journal articles, book, book chapters, reports, and abstracts and actively serve on several associations, both nationally and internationally. He also has served as an associate editor of International Psychogeriatrics since 2003.
