Frans Verhey, MD, PhD

Dr. Frans Verhey studied medicine in Amsterdam and received
his medical degree in 1981. He took postgraduate training in neurology,
psychiatry and neuropsychology, and completed his medical specialization as a
neuropsychiatrist in 1987. In 1993, he completed his thesis entitled:
“Dementia, Depression and Forgetfulness. Clinical studies into the
differential and early diagnosis of dementia.”
In 2001, he was appointed professor of old Age Psychiatry
and Neuroropsychiatry. Dr. Verhey is an active researcher in the field of Old
Age Psychiatry. The topics of his current research projects include: predictors
of conversion of mild cognitively impaired elderly into Alzheimer’s Disease;
the course and risk factors of behavioural disturbances in dementia; predictors
of vascular dementia; biological markers of depression in Parkinson’s Disease,
the course of depression after stroke, and the efficacy of a psychogeriatric day
hospital.
Dr. Verhey actively participates in several international
networks: the European AD Consortium, INTERDEM (about early interventions in
dementia), the North Sea Joint Meeting of Alzheimer Centres, and AWARE. He
is the project leader of EURO-HARPID (European harmonization project of commonly
used instruments for dementia) and of DESCRIPA (Development of Screening
Guidelines in Prodromal AD).
Dr. Verhey has been active in the field of Geriatric
Psychiatry for more than 15 years. He is the founder and coordinator of the
Maastricht Memory Clinic, the first one in the Netherlands. He is the present
Chair of the Section of Old Age Psychiatry of the Dutch Society for Psychiatry.
Presently, he is actively involved in the development of a regional
comprehensive programme for mental health in the elderly.
Besides his membership in IPA, Dr. Verhey is a member of
other professional societies: the Dutch Association of Psychiatry, the Dutch
Association of Neuropsychology, American Neuropsychiatric Association, and
the International College of Geriatric Psychopharmacology.
Dr. Verhey has been a member of IPA since 1994 and elected
